What Is
PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that is caused by experiencing a traumatic event or series of events. A diagnosis requires exposure to an upsetting traumatic event. However, the exposure could be indirect rather than firsthand. This can stem from childhood traumas, bullying, natural disasters, or other events that disrupt the normal life of an adolescent. The impacts of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can be incredibly disruptive to life and can cause the affected person to withdraw from things they previously enjoyed.Â

PTSD manifests itself in several different ways. Symptoms can include nightmares, flashbacks (both physical and emotional), and avoidance of things that remind them of the initial trigger.
